Hero 12 vs Action 4 - One is Good, The Other is GREAT!
Gopro has long been the heavyweight champion of the action cam world. Practice makes perfect so, seeing as they’re now on their 12th iteration of the Hero, that ought to be no surprise.
But the times, they COULD be a changin‘.
With the fourth generation of the Osmo Action series, drone giant DJI is putting forward a strong contender for Gopro‘s title.
The question is, which one is best for use on and around a motorcycle?
Also, which has the best battery life? Which has the best video quality? Which is the easiest to use? Which one will I choose for my videos?
All of these questions and more will be taken care of in this video!!
DJI provided both of the cameras in this video, free of charge. They did not, however, pay me for a good review or tell me what to say. All opinions are my own and, I think, all of them are very fair!

    Hi! Great ride! I have only got some 2,5 years and 40 000 km of experience on the motorbike. Also, I've never been to mountains, but this year I'm planing a big ride over de Alps. Would it be a good idea to go trough the Umbrail and Stelvio or are they too technical for a beginner rider? I really want to do them as well but kinda have my doubts... What do you think?

    I have the hero 12 and have just purchased the action 4… when I put the 256gb as card in the GoPro it shows I have 10+hours of record time but only 5 hours on the action 4. The settings are 4k 30 for both cameras. Have you found the same issue in your comparison?

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam 9 днів тому

      What’s the video compression set to? If the Action 4 is set to H.264, then the videos will be much larger. HEVC is the best choice for more space on the card.

    • @Mancs1000r
      @Mancs1000r 9 днів тому

      Quick reply thankyou. It’s set to HEVC, I never changed this setting. It’s strange, I have purchased a 512gb sandisk extreme pro in case the other sd cards had been somehow messed up by the GoPro which they have been used in, even with this 512gb it’s only showing 11hours record time 🤔

    Hello this way you are only lubrificante the left side links off the chain the oil ill never ritch the right

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam 10 днів тому

      The oil runs off of the sprocket on to the rollers of the chain. Due to capillary action from the close contact between the rollers and the sprocket, the oil works across the whole roller and on to the inside edge of the roller. I can categorically confirm this, because the other side of the sprocket is also wet with oil. The chain has always lasted exponentially longer for me with a chain oiler than without. Ultimately i don’t need to convince you of something, the opposite of which you have already convinced yourself. If you don’t want a chain oiler, good for you. But i know they work and that they keep my chain in good condition for longer.

      It depends on the circumstances. If the light is perfect, then definitely the Gopro, as it has higher resolution. In lower light conditions, probably the DJI as it has larger pixels which give it better light gathering capabilities.

      @@AndyManCam I had to replace the starting motor and they were asking me 900 USD for the original part and I found a compatible for 150 USD. I wonder how you can budget these level of expenses for a bike that is now worth 6000 USD max. There must be something wrong if I have to think to sell my bike instead of maintain at a reasonable and comparable to its value cost

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam 15 днів тому

      @dummylopez6094 The starter motor is naturally more expensive than the rotor, as it’s more complicated. But ultimately i think all of these things are a case of buyer beware. Come into any situation armed with the facts and you’ll know (like in your case) that they’re simply trying to charge you an arm and a leg to make a profit. Well done for finding a reasonably priced way to get out fixed! Here in Germany it seems that there is sadly a regular occurrence of mechanics saying a ridiculous number and hoping that the customer will just pay it without asking questions.

    Great comparison Andy that was obviously a lot of work! I tried the Action 4 but (without boring you) had trouble with the way it connects to the DJI Mic 2 which I've stuffed into my crash helmet :) So I'm still using a Hero 10 and Media Mod on my helmet, connected to a Purple Panda Mic. That's the backup audio really because I'm also using the Mic 2 and it's internal 32-Bit float recording which is very impressive! I now record in 4k 4:3 which allows some flexibility to reframe the footage in post. I'd never upload a 1080p motovlog video to UA-cam as their compression ruins the footage when it comes to faster motion. 4K is best IMO, for future proofing against whatever tricks YT may pull in the future reduce their video streaming costs... 1080p videos used to look fine in YT till a few years ago!

    What a great video. My hero 7 freezes all the time and I gave up filming. Was looking at the hero 10 but do you think the action 3 is better? Did you do a video on the action 3?

    I can see all of the upside seems to lean toward the Action 4, But every time I looked up to the top of the screen to see what camera was in use I thought "I like that picture the best" it was the Gopro!? I think its to do with the colour saturation, the Action 4 is just to much in your face colour wise .

    Fantastic video Andy 👍🏻 that is some serious time consuming video and editing thanks very much 👍🏻 I only this week jumped ship over to DJI Action 4, after problems with my Hero 10 not responding , and becoming unreliable🤦‍♂️ I am still getting to grips with the Action4 but mainly on the audio as I have bought the wireless Mic2 and just trying to find the sweet spot in the helmet 👍🏻 ride safe buddy and have fun 🏍️💨💨💨👍🏻

    Looks like GoPro resting on their reputation while DJI have been working hard on making a camera that just works. P.S. the bike sounds awesome 👍👍👍

      It does, doesn’t it! Easily the most addictive sounding bike I’ve had. Yeah Gopro really pulled out the laziness stops (or perhaps the opposite!) with the H12, which easily could have been a firmware upgrade to the H11. Hope they sort it out for the H13 or it really could be curtains for the champion!

    Great Review 👍 much better POV than 360 cam. We have Action 4 to capture off road trail rides. Noticed you choose 4k / 25 fps but mostly ride on road vs. extreme trails. We use 2.7k / 60 fps in Pro D-log settings. There was a conversation on DJI forum stating 4k is internally upscale from 2.7 to 4k. One reason we use 60 fps is better frame grabs for stills. Can ad motion blur in post but cannot convert it to sharp image. Thank you, enjoyed riding along. PS: We have BMW R1200gs

      I almost always use 2.7k aswell. Best balance of quality and size. Plus, as you mention, it’s a true 2.7k, rather than the crop for stabilization. I‘d very much like to do more offroad with the Aprilia but it’s sadly not very easy here in northern Germany.

      Hi Philip. It’s the Aprilia option SC Project. Do you have a Tuareg? I’ve always been of the opinion that most of the awesome noise comes from the airbox with this bike!

      Not at the moment but it’s looking like a stablemate for my GS.

      @AndyManCam 19 днів тому

      @philipchesters2824 And a fine stablemate it would be! But i reckon that other than weight saving and looks, the SC endcan doesn’t make a huge difference. I didn’t notice a huge sind difference between the stocker i test rode and mine. I just got the can because it was already on the ex-demo bike.

    Top job. Way beyond my needs. But what I want to know is, why have you got a picnic basket riding pillion?

      Thanks Michael. Doesn’t everybody take their picnic basket with them?!

    Superb comparison! I’ve had the same GoPro freezing issues after charging and it seems to have a a falling out with the media mod too. I think it’s time to jump ship to the DJI. The easy of use and audio setup is a massive win!

      That’s a real shame, but then it would be naive to imagine i was the only one! It’s a shame they’re still missing with software problems. Especially as they basically invented the whole action cam thing!! Ease of use with DJI has been an undeniable win for me. Even when the image quality of the Action 3 was worse than the Hero 8, it was still an easy choice to make for the sake of reliability.

      Thank you kindly Dave 🙏🏻 Anything i can do to lighten your workload 😜 I’m well thanks. Loving the Aprilia Tuareg, but seeing as you’ve got a 660 based machine too, i don’t need to preach to the choir! Hope you’re also well mate.
